Description

Folios 103-104. Everard Fawkener to duke of Newcastle. He has sent a messenger, accompanied by Mr Oliver Williams [alias Dudley Bradstreet], to duke of Newcastle with a report on troop and rebel [Jacobite] movements. General Oglethorpe and his cavalry are at Garstang, with orders to advance across Elkhill moor towards Lancaster tonight and attack rebel [Jacobite] patrols. If the rebels [Jacobites] flee, Oglethorpe is to be supported in pursuing them by troops from Garstang and Preston. If they remain in Lancaster Oglethorpe will await the arrival of [duke of Cumberland]. The rebels [Jacobites] will probably depart tomorrow. Duke of Perth departed from Lancaster towards Carlisle yesterday with 150 horse; Lord Lonsdale may intercept him. Local people have detained some stragglers, including Captain Mackenzie, who will be imprisoned at Wigan. Representatives of Liverpool have offered to supply provisions including biscuits and hay. With addition written on the morning of 15 December 1745, acknowledging receipt of the king's last orders. Dated at Preston.
