Folios 55-56. Lord Panmure to Mr Maule [copy]. While at Wiggan [Wigan] his detachment was ordered to return to London, but this was countermanded by an order to march to Preston, where he is now awaiting orders from duke [of Cumberland] who has gone to Lancaster. The rebels [Jacobites] left Lancaster the day before yesterday and are now at least as far as Carlisle. He has examined Captain McKenzie, who was captured near Wiggan [Wigan] and spoke of disagreements in the rebel [Jacobite] council over whether or not to continue to London. These disagreements led to Lord George Murray being guarded. He also said that he thought the rebels [Jacobites] would disperse in Scotland, and that the highlanders number less than 3,000. With postscript stating that he has received orders to march to Shap via Kendall [Kendal] and Lancaster. Duke [of Cumberland] left Lancaster today for Kendall [Kendal]. The rebels [Jacobites] are now at Carlisle. Dated at Preston.
