Folios 53-54. Sir Conyers D'Arcy to [duke of Newcastle]. Lord Maldon's suggestion that a gratuity out of the remainder of the county fund be offered to any volunteer willing to serve with the regular troops is the only way to assist Marshal Wade's recruitment. The gentlemen of the lieutenancy and commission of peace for the North Riding have met and agreed to follow the king's commands, but do not consider the North Riding secure while the rebels [Jacobites] possess Carlisle. They have reports that Admiral Vernon has taken many French transports and the duke [of Cumberland] is pursuing the rebels [Jacobites], who are in poor condition and are opposed by the people of Westmorland and Cumberland. With postscript stating that Lord Tyrawley is now here and that he and his division at Richmond are well. Dated at Aske.
