Folios 98-102. Draft. Duke of Newcastle to Duke of Devonshire. Praises Devonshire's reports on the rebels' [Jacobites'] movements which have helped halt their march on London. Reports indicate an imminent invasion from Dunkirk with at least 12,000 men and many ships; there are few troops in London. [Sir John] Ligonier will return to London, with Duke [of Cumberland] to follow. The King has ordered reinforcements for Marshal Wade. Major General Huske and Lord Albemarle will replace Wade in Scotland. The Hessian troops will proceed to Edinburgh. The Dutch are distressed by the removal of our troops. The Queen of Hungary has recalled troops from the Rhine and Flanders to use against Prussia. Mr [William] Pitt's behaviour in the House [of Commons] has made further correspondence difficult. The Duke of Bedford and Lord Gower support the government. [Duke of Cumberland] and Major General Oglethorpe are pursuing the panicking rebels [Jacobites]. Hopes the Duke will return to London. He is to give directions regarding Mr Heathcote and to assure Sir Nathaniel Curzon of the King's support. Dated at Whitehall [Middlesex, London].
