Description

Folios 92-93. Marshal Wade to Duke of Newcastle. He has ordered Major General Huske to march to Newcastle [Northumberland]. He will follow, but the state of his troops slows his advance. Has made dispositions [enclosed] to march his army in several divisions so it can be put under cover at night. Awaits King's command regarding Dutch troops and the letter from Lord John Drummond proposing an exchange of prisoners. The rebels [Jacobites] reached Lancaster [Lancashire] on 12 December and Major General Oglethorpe arrived at Preston [Lancashire] on 13 December. The rebels may now have reached Carlisle [Cumberland]; if they abandon it he will occupy the castle, but will need larger artillery if it is occupied. If the rebels retake Edinburgh, the Hessians will be unable to land in the Firth [of Forth]. It is impractical for them to march there from Newcastle without encamping; their provisions requirements. Dated at Wigan [Lancashire]. Enclosure:

1. Folios 94-97. Resolution of Wade's council of war held at Boroughbridge [Yorkshire], 14 December 1745, to proceed by divisions [listed] including Dutch and Swiss troops. Dated 14 December at Ripon.
