Folios 90-91. [William] Battine to Duke of Newcastle. Has dispatched the King's orders to the officers of the customs in the county [Sussex]. The area has been alarmed by false reports of a landing by the French in Pevensey Bay [Sussex]. The country showed great loyalty during this alarm, which reached Portsmouth [Hampshire] before messengers were dispatched to verify the reports. If a rising occurs the troops raised in Sussex will be of little use as they have not received their arms. If the French hear the rebels [Jacobites] are forced back into Scotland, their invasion plans will be abandoned. Dated at East Marden [Sussex].
