Description

Depositions of Elizabeth Hambleton, wife of Peter Hambleton [Jacobite], concerning two men called Captain Kelly [Jacobite]. The deponent states that she went to Rochester [Kent] to assist her husband but when she arrived he had already been sentenced. The deponent explains she met her husband in prison together with another man and his wife. The man called himself Captain Kelly. Hambleton told his wife that Kelly could save his life and told her to go with Kelly's wife to London. Kelly told the deponent that he and her husband had enlisted in the Pretender's service and he would do all to assist him. Kelly said his wife had 'suckled two of Lady Godfrey's children' and for this reason, could obtain a pardon for Hambleton. The two women went to London and visited Newgate gaol where they met another man also calling himself Captain Kelly who assured the deponent that if Lady Godfrey could not assist he would contact the Duke of Ormonde [James Butler, Jacobite sympathies]. The deponent had two petitions drawn up by Charles Burton, one of the prisoners, and sent one to the queen and gave one to Judge Lewis who told her he could not help unless 'considerable people' backed the petition. Signed by the mark of Elizabeth Hambleton and dated at Whitehall.
