[William] Dixon and [Thomas] Bliss, Justices of the Peace to Bromley, writing from Maidstone [Kent].
Referring to the examining of Peter Hambleton, a convict in Maidstone gaol. Letter states they have searched for all papers belonging to [William] Kelly and his fellow-prisoners but nothing was found.
Enclosure:
Examination of Peter Hambleton. Hambleton is accused of having been enlisted by [William] Kelly into the service of the Pretender. [William] Kelly is accused of being in the pay of Captain Kelly [Jacobite] now in Newgate gaol. The three men admit to being Roman Catholics. Hambleton states that Kelly told him that several 'great men' in London were sympathetic to the cause and names Lord [William] Ross. Hambleton admits that he enlisted and Kelly entered his name in a book, together with several other names. Hambleton tells the examiners that [William] Kelly was worried that the book would fall into the wrong hands because of Captain Kelly's arrest and imprisonment.
