Folios 76 and 79. J Lister to [Newcastle]. Dated at Bawtry [Yorkshire]. Enclosures:
1. Folio 77. Information of Mary Cross, Deputy Postmistress at Bawtry, and John Bower, her servant. Mr Slater, apothecary, returned a letter containing the Pretender [Charles Edward Stuart's] printed declaration. Taken before Thomas Lister, Justice of the Peace for Yorkshire.
2. Folio 78. Printed copy of declaration by 'Charles Prince of Wales', 'Regent of the Kingdoms of England, Scotland, France, and Ireland'. Outlines his intentions: To allow religious freedom; To deal with National Debt; To re-examine Acts of Parliament made since 'the Revolution'. Criticises failures and abuses of current government. Dismisses 'groundless' fears of French and Spanish involvement; Criticises government's use of 'foreign Hirelings'. Signed by C P R [Charles, Prince Regent] and J Murray. Dated at Palace of Holyroodhouse, 10 October 1745.
