Selected under Acquisition Policy criteria 2.2.2.1 and 2.2.2.2, documenting the control of burial ground closures by the Privy Council Office under the Burials Act 1853. Policy files retained,routine case files destroyed.

Administrative / biographical background

Under section 1 of the Burials Act 1853, certain Secretaries of State can represent to the Monarch in Council that the use of certain burial grounds, or the continuation of burials in any city, town or other area, should be discontinued. The Monarch can then order such discontinuations by means of an Order in Council.
