The title"InterCity" referred to British Rail's express passenger services between major population centres and was coined in 1966. In 1982 InterCity became a business sector of British Rail responsible for its own strategy, investment and marketing. Between 1992 and 1994 InterCity had direct responsibility for engineering functions. The InterCity sector was broken up in 1994 and delegated to sub-sectors but the branding continued for some time afterwards.
