Acquisition criteria: The economic, social and demographic condition of the UK. Merchant seamen were a reserved occupation during the Second World War and their service on merchant ships was equivalent to service in the armed forces. In the immediate post-war period their contribution was essential to the recovery of the UK. A commitment was given to the Advisory Council in the mid-1990s that all of these records would be preserved.
