Between 1968 and 1985 the Diplomatic Service Inspectorate undertook management review and inspection of home departments and overseas posts to assess the effectiveness of the operations carried out and to make staffing level recommendations. The home and overseas functions of the inspectorate were split in 1985, when separate Overseas Inspectorate and Management Review Staff Departments were formed.
