Administrative / biographical background

The Marine and Transport Department was formed in 1970 when the functions previously exercised by the Aviation, Marine and Telecommunications Department were split, and separate Aviation and Communications and Marine and Transport Departments were formed. From 1973, the aviation work was returned to the Marine and Transport Department, which dealt with international air transport matters including hijacking from that year.
