Administrative / biographical background

British Rail Hovercraft Ltd was set up in March 1966 to run hovercraft services to the continent and Isle of Wight. It operated under the brand names 'British Rail Hovercraft Ltd' and 'Seaspeed', before merging in October 1981 with Hoverlloyd to become Hoverspeed UK Ltd. The British Rail Board disposed of its interest in Hoverspeed UK Ltd in February 1984.
