This series contains internal histories of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and a few of the Foreign Office. The records cover a wide variety of topics where the FCO determined there was value to the department in creating an internal history of events and the development of policy. The format of the histories has varied over time, and they do not form a distinct series.

Copies transferred to the PRO were held by the Records and Historical Department and its predecessors.

The preserved version is a printed copy.

Selection and destruction information

Records selected by the FCO under PRO supervision under section 2.2.1.3 of the PRO acquisition policy, dealing with the history of the conduct of the UK's external relations in particular instances. All internal histories have been selected for permanent preservation.

Internal histories were written by departmental officials who had been closely involved in work on the topic concern, and so were generated by staff from many different parts of the organisation.
