The AIDS Advertising Education survey was commissioned to evaluate the effectiveness of AIDS advertising by Department of Health and Social Security. The study gathered data from a representative sample of adults aged 18-64, homosexuals who visit gay pubs and clubs as well as young people aged 13-17. Face to face interviews using the main questionnaire were carried out in gay pubs and nightclubs. Other questionnaires were filled out by interviewees by themselves. Data includes awareness of AIDS, changes in attitudes towards AIDS and related subjects, and changes in sexual behaviour.

This dataset was deposited by the Department of Health and Social Security at the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Data Archive, University of Essex, before December 1987. In 2000 it was transferred from the ESRC Data Archive to the UK National Digital Archive of Datasets (NDAD) who held the dataset until 2010 when it was transferred to The National Archives (TNA).

The AIDS Advertising Evaluation survey was principally carried out by the Central Office of Information and the British Market Research Bureau. The latter also gathered the data. The research Initiator was the Central Office of Information and the project was sponsored by the Department of Health and Social Security.
The purpose of AIDS Advertising Evaluation survey was to evaluate the effects of the DHSS AIDS advertising campaign, study the awareness of AIDS as well as changes in attitudes towards AIDS and changes in sexual behaviour during the period 1986-1987.
A copy of the dataset is also held at the Data Archive at the University of Essex where it has been given the Study reference number 2178.
