This volume was selected as a record of significant cases in the development of charity law and one which provided documentation of the Charity Commission's functions and remit.
The Charitable Trusts Act 1853 empowered the Board of Charity Commissioners to certify to the Attorney General cases that appeared to them to justify proceedings. The Attorney General then sought the opinion of Counsel on the case and decided whether or not it should proceed.
