The National Council for Domestic Studies was set up in 1919, as a successor to the National Union for the Technical Education of Women in Domestic Science. The National Union was formed in 1876 by three northern colleges but by 1919, it was recognised that much of its work had been taken over by the Board of Education. It was still felt that there was a continuing need for a body which would promote the wider study and teaching of domestic subjects. Consequently the National Council was established. In addition to its promotional objectives, the council provided examiners and evaluated examinations in these subjects.
In 1966, the name of the council was changed to the National Council for Home Economic Education to reflect a widening of the council's remit to cover further education courses, including A level examinations.
In 1982, the council was wound up and its responsibilities were passed to the City and Guilds of London Institute and the Technician Education Council.
The council met once a year and the minutes of these meetings were published in the annual report.
