In August 1914 reservists from the Royal Naval Reserve, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and the Royal Fleet Reserve were brigaded along with certain battalions of Royal Marines, into the Royal Naval Division, a naval fighting force on land which saw distinguished service in the Dardanelles in 1915 and on the Western Front from 1916.
In June 1916 the Division was transferred to Army control as the 63rd (Royal Naval) Division. It was formed into three brigades (numbered 188-190) of four battalions each; 190 brigade was formed from Army battalions. In June 1919 the Division took part in its final parade and was disbanded.
