Following establishment of the Corporation in 1969, there were two boards: the statutory Post Office Board and the Post Office Management Board (which had its first meeting on 6 July, 1970). Both oversaw all the Post Office's operations (ie posts, telecommunications and Girobank), but the Post Office Management Board was responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Corporation while the Board took responsibility for strategic issues.
In 1978 and 1979, the Board operated under the terms of the industrial democracy experiment, with about half its membership nominated by BT's unions. This experiment was considered to be unsuccessful.
In 1980, in preparation for the departure of British Telecom from the Post Office, separate Boards were established for the Telecommunications and the Posts & Girobank businesses. These two new boards replaced the Management Board.
