The first Ofsted Complaints Adjudicator was appointed in July 1998. The appointment was made as a result of a very critical response to the actions of the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) and some inspection reports produced by the Inspectorate. Initially complaints were addressed to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Administration but for various reasons this was not regarded as satisfactory.
In 1997, Ofsted decided to make its procedures more open by the appointment of an Adjudicator. The role of the Adjudicator is to review the handling of complaints; to facilitate agreements where possible between Ofsted and the complainants and to provide information to Ofsted which will contribute to the development to its activities and improve its handing of complaints.
