The Sovereign, by royal warrant dated 23 August 1945, instituted a medal, The King's Medal for Service in the Cause of Freedom. Its purpose was to recognise foreign nationals, mainly civilians of allied countries, who had given meritorious service in furtherance of the interests of the British Commonwealth in the allied cause during the Second World War. Two thousand five hundred and thirty nine awards of the King's Medal for Service were made.
