Administrative / biographical background

In 1970 the National Economy Group was re-created in the Treasury. At the same time the Economic Section ceased to exist as a unit of organisation and most of its economists allocated to positions in one or other of the divisions of the National Economy Group.

The Economic Assessment Division was one of these. It was headed by the Chief Economic Adviser, who was also Head of the Government Economic Service, a post previously held by the head of the Economic Section. It took over from the Economic Section the function of giving advice to Treasury Divisions concerned with public expenditure. Economic Assessment undertook medium term assessment using economic modelling, and employing a computer systems consultant. In the 1975 Treasury re-organisation a Chief Economic Adviser's Sector took over this work.
