Description

Folios 100-101. Examination of Alexander May. Born East Lothian, farmer's son. In October 1746 worked for Mr Sutton, wine merchant in Stockton, Durham. Travelled to London with Mr Bourdin attorney. Starting business partnership in city with brother of Mr Hunter, merchant. Lodged at [?Mrs] Burleigh's house, Cranburn Alley. No knowledge of Mr Anderson alias Thompson being involved in [Jacobite] rebellion. At father's house in Bolton during rebellion. Recently moved to Duke's Court near St Martin's Lane. Mr Smith from East Lothian also lodges there, tutoring Laird of McLeod's children. Mr Ramsay, saddler in St James' Square, provided money to May. Taken before T W [Thomas Waite]. Dated at Whitehall [London, Middlesex].

Folios 102-103. Examination of Robert Thompson, alias Anderson. Travelled to London from Edinburgh, considering entering Dutch Service in Holland. Tended farm near Edinburgh during [Jacobite] rebellion. Real name Anderson, goes by Thompson, his father's Christian name. Not employed to deliver messages or letters to London or Holland. Mr Smith, tutor to Laird of McLeod's son, found him lodgings at Mrs Burleigh's house, Duke's Court. Does not know Mr [Alexander] May. Taken before T [Thomas] Waite. Dated at Whitehall.
