Description

Folios 49-50. Baron Charles Clarke to Newcastle. Concerns the case of Peter Owen, a young man tried for burglary at Worcester [Worcestershire] assizes. Recommendation for mercy on condition of transportation for 14 years. Dated at Bloomsbury Square [London, Middlesex]. Filed with:

1. Folios 51 and 54. Covering letter from Baron Charles Clarke to [Newcastle]. Concerns the case of Peter Owen, convicted for burglary. Dated at Godmanchester [Cambridgeshire] 28 April 1747. Enclosure:

2. Folios 52-53. Report by Baron Charles Clarke on case of Peter Owen. Convicted of burglary at last Worcester assizes for burglary against William Peart of Pirton [Worcestershire]. Dated 28 April 1747.

4. Folio 56. Petition of principal inhabitants of Pirton to Earl of Coventry. Request for commutation of death sentence on Peter Owen to transportation or employment in land or sea service. 5. Folios 57 and 60. Covering letter from Wm [William] Bund, undersheriff, to Earl of Coventry. Concerns the case of condemned criminal [Peter Owen], whose reprieve expires beginning of May. Seals attached. Dated at Worcester on 22 April 1747. Enclosures:

6. Folio 58. Ben [Benjamin] Holt to [unknown]. Request for sentence of death on Peter Owen to be commuted to transportation on the grounds that this was his first offence and that certificate signed by local inhabitants has been produced in his favour.

7. Folio 59. Certificate from inhabitants and freeholders of parish of Old Radnor [Radnorshire], supporting Peter Owen, born in parish. Signed by: H Lewis; John James; Walter Williams; Peter Rickards; Philip Thomas; Tho [Thomas] Dale; Tho [Thomas] Evans; Tho [Thomas] Jones; James Davice; James Duggan; Samuel Vaughan; John Vaughan; Thomas Price; John Beaumount.
