Folios 44-45. Memorial of Sir John Gordon, on behalf of nephew Lord MacLeod, to Newcastle. MacLeod precipitated into 'cause of the Pretender' [Jacobite rebellion] due to father's involvement. Testimony from nobles and gentlemen in his favour. Father received benefit of king's mercy on 8 August [1746]. MacLeod pleaded guilty, petitioned for mercy on 29 August [1746], allowed to remain in Tower [of London] until trial on 20 December. Considered in council on 15 December [1746]. Gordon, with John Martin, ensign in Lord Loudoun's regiment, met Newcastle on 19 December with another petition in MacLeod's favour; MacLeod promised pardon same as [William] Murray. Pleaded guilty again on 20 December relying on king's mercy. Crown lawyers not yet able to draw warrant for pardon. More evidence in MacLeod's favour given on 25 March [1747]. On 10 March Dr Wilmot and Dr Pitcairn certified poor state of health. Also request for financial support for both prisoners and Lady Cromartie.
