Folios 17-18. Postmaster General [earl of] Leicester to Newcastle, concerning Nathaniel Miller. Convicted at Guildford [Surrey] assizes of robbery of the west mail in Aug 1746. Justice Burnett passed sentence of death, possibly commuted to transportation for 14 years. Concerned reducing sentence would set precedent, leading to more mail robberies. Believes Chester mail robbery was encouraged by this offer of leniency. Opinion that Miller not worthy of King's mercy. Dated at the General Post Office.
