Description

Folios 1-2. Representation of John Poulson, Middlesex Justice of the Peace for over 30 years, to Newcastle. Request for compensation or reward for his years of service. Copies of certificates in his favour enclosed. Enclosures:

1. Folio 3. Copy of certificate of recommendation from [earl of] Leicester and Everard Fawkener to Newcastle that Poulson is always 'very ready, willing and desirous' to bring offenders against Fawkener's branch of the revenue to justice. Dated at General Post Office 16 Oct 1746.

2. Folios 4-5. Copy of record of Poulson's activities relating to Customs offences and smuggling, between 19 Nov 1740 and 8 Nov 1746: Thomas Davidge, informed against Henry Wright and eight others; Thomas Powell, indicted; Wm [William] Weston, informed against Flushing Jack and 17 others; John Druit, imprisoned in Newgate [London] for obstructing customs officers Isaac Hill and Nicholas Comber; Wm [William] Plumlee, informed against John Druit and four others; John Sclater, imprisoned for obstructing customs officers, bail request by Mr Smith, attorney; John Steinson, imprisoned for obstructing customs officer John Ellis; Jacob Walker imprisoned for obstructing customs officers; information from customs officer Hugh Donaldson about cart seized from John Swain of Stanwell [Middlesex]; examinations concerning George Whipp; Richard Bunce, Richard Smith, Richard Young, David Croude, Thomas Keare and Thos [Thomas] Hales informed against various people. Signed by H Simon, solicitor for the Customs.

3. Folio 6. Copy of certificate from W [William] Luke and Robt [Robert] Bland, on behalf of Poulson, to Henry Pelham. Dated at Office for Licensing Hawker etc 9 April 1747.

4. Folio 7. Copy of certificate of Jno [John] North, Solicitor of the Mint, in support of Poulson. Always been diligent carrying out duties against counterfeiters. Dated 1 May 1747.
