Folio 77. Geo [George] Shelvocke to Earl of Chesterfield, accompanying accounts of French hostilities from Postmistress of Deal [Kent] and government agent at Dover [Kent]. Dated at General Post Office. Enclosing:
Folio 78. Copy of report from Bryan Pybus. French have laid siege to Sluys [Flanders], reports of cannon fire heard at Flushing [Flanders]. French have also taken the island of Cadsant, those able have fled to island of Zeeland. King's ship The Glasgow now in port at Flushing. Dutch vessels being armed to protect Zeeland. General opinion is that these actions are declaration of war by France. Dated at Dover [Kent] 10 April 1747.
Folio 79. Copy of letter from Eliz [Elizabeth] Stone. News of express from Dover concerning naval engagement between York and Eagle privateers and 20-Gun French ship, lasting 5 hours on 8 April. Four men killed and nine wounded on York. Dated at Post Office in Deal [Kent] 10 April 1747.
