Folio 59. Affidavit of John Alder of Hexham [Northumberland] sworn before Shafto Downes. Concerns subpoenas served to witnesses for trial of John Sanderson. One to Nicholas Smith of Thirlwall [Northumberland]. One to Mary Smith, who said she would not be able to travel to London. One to her husband Edward Smith of Brampton [Cumberland], but he was away; copy was left with his wife to pass on. George Sanderson of Healey [Northumberland], brother of John Sanderson, defendant, will endeavour to provide transport to London for witnesses. Dated at Hexham [Northumberland] 11 July 1746.
Folio 60. Copy of subpoena ordering witness to appear on 15 Jul 1746 at Town Hall in Southwark [Surrey], to give evidence in trial of John Sanderson for high treason. Note on reverse states George Sanderson served copies of subpoena to three men: Robert Smith on 10 Jul 1746, John Heron and Thos [Thomas] Trotter on 11 Jul 1746. Printed by Robert Jones, stationer, at Post House in Temple Lane. Dated 10 July 1746.

Note on reverse states Jno [John] Alder served copies of subpoena to three people on 9 July: Nicholas Smith, Mary Smith, and left copy with Mary for husband Edward Smith. Dated 9 July 1746.

Folio 63. Subpoena summoning Edward Smith, wife Mary Smith, and Nicholas Smith to appear on 15 July 1746 at Town Hall in Southwark, to give evidence in trial of John Sanderson for high treason.
Folio 64. Petition of John Sanderson, prisoner under sentence of death. Travelling to Whitehall [Cumberland] in September 1745, to manage colliery for Mr Hodgson, he was captured during journey by rebels [Jacobites] near Brampton [Cumberland], and taken to house of Edward Smith. Threats of violence forced him to travel with them to Carlisle [Cumberland]. Only had 10 days to prepare for trial; sent subpoenas to defence witnesses, but they couldn't make 300 mile journey in time.
Folio 65. Petition for a pardon from king of John Sanderson, prisoner in New Gaol, Southwark [Surrey]. Sentenced to death in July 1746, his execution respited, due to his previous petition presented by Duke of Ancaster and Lord Falmouth. Forced into [Jacobite] rebellion, and protected people and property from the rebels as shown by affidavits in his favour.
Folio 66. Petition of John Sanderson, under sentence of death for high treason. Witnesses Edward Smith and Mary Smith can prove rebels [Jacobites] took Sanderson by force. Served with subpoenas but were unable to attend trial. Edward Smith has providing affidavit of his testimony, annexed to this petition.
Folio 67. Affidavit of Edward Smith innholder of Brampton [Cumberland], in favour of John Sanderson. Swears that John Sanderson was a prisoner of the rebel [Jacobite] army in Brampton on 14 November 1745. Examined by the Young Pretender [Charles Edward Stuart], and carried to Carlisle as a prisoner. Did not see Sanderson with weapons or cockade in his hat while at Brampton. Sworn before Jno [John] King, commissioner. Dated at Brampton [Cumberland] 10 August 1746.
Folios 68-69. Letter from Mr Blackett to Mr Pelham on behalf of John Sanderson, in the New Prison [New Gaol, Southwark] to stand trial for high treason. Brought there with other [Jacobite] prisoners from Carlisle. Requesting Pelham's help bringing case to attention of king, so he might receive mercy. Dated at Newcastle [Northumberland] 11 July 1746.
Folios 70-71. Affidavit by several people supporting John Sanderson's behaviour while with rebels [Jacobites] at Carlisle. Prevented theft and property damage rebels would have otherwise caused. Signed by: Matthew Robson, Esquire from Stonegarthside [Cumberland]; Richard Carruthers, keeper of the gaol of the city of Carlisle [Cumberland]; Edmund Blacklock, blacksmith from Sealsby; John Forster, miller from Kirsop Mill [Cumberland]; John Barnes, saddler from the city of Carlisle; Henry Armstrong, innkeeper from Rickergate, Carlisle. Sworn before Jno [John] King, commissioner. Dated at Carlisle [Cumberland] 15 August 1746.
