Description

Folio 93. Sam [Samuel] Smith to Andrew Stone concerning the capture, near Antigua, of his ship Veteran sailing out of Liverpool [Lancashire, Merseyside], with 150 rebel prisoners carried to Martinico [Martinique], by the French privateer Diamond commanded by Paul Marsale. Smith requests the Duke of Newcastle to approach the French Governor for their recovery. Also refers to 75 rebels sent with the East India expedition. Other prisoners are safe in Barbados, Jamaica and Virginia. Smith inquires after the remaining prisoners from Carlisle [Cumberland], York [Yorkshire], Southwark [Surrey] and elsewhere. Post scriptum refers to the unsuccessful return of ships sent to find a north-west passage. Dated at Cateaton Street. Enclosing:
