Description

Folio 82. [Attorney general Sir Dudley] Ryder to Duke of Newcastle, concerning the discovery in Nottingham [Nottinghamshire] of two treasonous and anonymous letters and opining that there are insufficient grounds to detain William Cuite.

Folio 83. William Leviner, Commissioner of Customs, at Customs House, from Langford Colliy, concerning two treasonous letters, one placed in Mr Hawksworth's shop 'designed to cast odium upon Will Ellison', and another found nearby. Describes a pro-Jacobite climate of opinion at Newark [Nottinghamshire], where 'one Clay had his arm broke for refusing to drink the Pretender's health', and mentions Job Charlton and Mr Stowe. Dated 17 October 1747 at Nottingham [Nottinghamshire].

Folio 84. Thomas Langford, mayor of Nottingham, to Duke of Newcastle concerning treasonous letters, describing the detention of a William Cuite, formerly an excise officer at Scarborough [Yorkshire], Bridlington [Yorkshire], Hull [Yorkshire], and other places in the county, and a tidewaiter in London, and referring to a revival in the 'late spirit of [Jacobite] rebellion]'. Dated 17 October 1747 at Nottingham.

Folio 85. Affidavit of saddler Thomas Hawsworth [signs Hawkesworth] concerning his discovery of a treasonous letter as he opened the door of his shop located beneath the mayor's lodgings. Dated 15 October 1747 at Nottingham.

Folio 86. Letter expressing support for 'our Noble Prince Charles' and hopes for the overthrown of 'the Usurper George', signed W-E-ll-n.

Folio 88. Affidavit of labourer Samuel Fosterd and grocer Wm [William] Thompson of Nottingham, concerning their discovery of a treasonous letter. Dated 17 October 1747 at Nottingham.

Folio 89-90. Letter to "friends in the town of Nottingham" urging them to join an impending uprising in favour of the House of Stuart, signed W-l-n; J-o-g. Dated 4 Oct 1747 at Manchester.
