The correspondence in the files is mainly between the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and various county medical officers of health, usually dealing with the incidence and treatment of various diseases and medical conditions within Wales. Also included are the minutes of Medical Officers', Area Nursing Officers' and Area Dental Officers' meetings and a number of working parties.
Most of the records in this collection were created by Dr R T Bevan who was Principal, later Chief, Medical Officer (CMO) at the Welsh Hospital Board and the Welsh Office. Some later files appear to have been created and used by the Chief Nursing Officer, Miss E A Bell. It is not clear whether there were originally two separate collections but the collection has been treated as one for the last twenty years.
