Former Reference A23. Extract of letter from [unknown] to [?Lord Carteret], describing the failed [Jacobite] plans to invade England, mentioning the intention of [Cardinal Francesco Acquaviva] and 'the Pretender' [James Francis Edward Stuart] to travel to Bagnani [Bagnaia, Lazio, Italy] when a man-o-war was off Corisca, and the Duke of Ormonde's relatives arrived in Portolongone [Porto Azzurro, Elba, Italy]. Gives four reasons for the failure of the plot, including 'the Pretender's timorousness who, not to expose himself, proposed the sending [of] his son [Charles Edward Stuart]'. French. Dated at Rome. Filed with:
English translation of above extract, with a passage mentioning troops at Barcelona being sent to Tuscany and the Gulf of Spain, and a reference to the names of Acquaviva and Cardinal Guilo Alberoni as being the source of information, being crossed out.
