Former Reference A15. Extract of letter from Colonel [Ambassador William] Stanhope to Lord Carteret advising that he had passed, to the King of Spain and Marquise de Grimaldo, Carteret's account of military preparations [against a Jacobite uprising], and describes Philip V's friendship for [George I] and abandonment of the 'Pretender' [James Francis Edward Stuart]. He advises that the Duke of Ormonde is at the Duke of Medinaceli's house at Ventosilla for easier access to Bilbao where, at the house of Irish merchant Mr Brown, there are 12,000 arms, and where Captain Morgan commands three ships to land arms at Bristol [Gloucestershire], Milford [?Hampshire], or Hylake. Also mentions meeting [?code number] '1210', and reports the Spanish squadron sailing from Cadiz towards Cape St Vincent [Portugal] 'to cruise against the Algerines [?Algerians]'. Dated at Madrid.
