Attorney General [Nicholas] Lechmere's report on the petition of [?Jacobite] James Leonard, indicted for high treason committed at Calais [France], who is seeking clemency subject to transportation. He advises that the 'proper legal method' of dealing with the case would be a pardon under condition 'that he do transport himself out of Your Majesty's dominions'. Enclosure:
Petition of James Leonard, who was acquitted in Lancaster [Lancashire] but still brought in chains to Newgate [prison, London] and arraigned upon a Middlesex indictment. He promises to leave the country and not to return without licence.
