S [Samuel] Buckley to Earl Stanhope [Secretary of State, Northern Department], relating local feeling about the loyalty of the people and the 'chief Tories' of Exeter [Devonshire] and Devonshire, and predicting that any [Jacobite] invasion by the Pretender [James Francis Edward Stuart] would be more likely in the Bristol Channel, about Minehead [Somerset] or towards Bristol [Gloucestershire], than in the 'British Channel'. Dated at Bridgewater [Somerset].
