Description

Robt [Robert] Gutch to the King, accusing the Corporation of Wells [Somerset] of disloyal, [pro-Jacobite], and Catholic leanings, mentioning; the mayor Robert Taylor; Sir William Windham; Windham's steward counsellor Mallet; Sir Copelstone [Coplestone] Banfield; Bishop of Bath and Wells [George Hooper]; Charles Baron; William Wesly [?Wesley]; and his own brother, the Wells town clerk John Gutch. Also mentions refusal of local officials to collect Land Tax, and their imposition of an alternative rate, as well as a rumour of invasion led by the Duke of Ormond. Dated at Wells.
