Description

Prisoner name: Thomas Morgan.

Prisoner age: 35 years.

Court and date of trial: Central Criminal Court 21 December 1838.

Crime: Embezzlement. Prosecutor Joseph Taylor.

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.

Gaoler's report: 'Character not known'.

Annotated (Outcome): 'Free Pardoned 21 August 1840'.

Petitioner(s): The prisoner, undersigned by 47 supporters including Major-General Dyson. The prisoner, undersigned by 85 supporters. Caroline Lloyd, late Caroline Bessells, of 2 Carlton Street, Regent Street, Pall Mall.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner is innocent, of good character, and never had felonious intent; the prosecutor neglected his business and the prisoner had extra duties which prevented his attention to the accounts; the prisoner was found guilty on the oath of the prosecutor only, and the prosecutor has since been found guilty of perjury in his own bankruptcy.

Other papers: Letter from [J Annan], Hill Street, [London]. Letter from Joseph Taylor to the Marquis of Normanby. Home Office note. Letter against the decision to pardon the prisoner, stating that he was responsible for the financial ruin of the prosecutor.
