Description

Prisoner name: John Legget.

Prisoner occupation: Master mariner.

Court and date of trial: Central Criminal Court, 3 January 1838.

Crime: Manslaughter on the high seas. Victim Joseph Brown.

Initial sentence: Two years imprisonment in Penitentiary.

Annotated (Outcome): 'Nil'.

Petitioner(s): 102 respectable inhabitants of the Burgh of Port-Glasgow, and copy of same.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner pleaded guilty on the advice of his Counsel but was innocent; the prisoner has already served approximately 12 months of his sentence; the prisoner is of good character; the victim was ill before he boarded the ship but this was not known to the prisoner; the prisoner has three sisters to support; had the prisoner asked for a postponement of the trial, the crew would have been available as witnesses.

Other papers: Letter from J C [Colquhan], enclosing a petition from the prisoner [petition not enclosed]. Letter from Francis Hobler, 30 Walbrook, Mansion House, forwarding petition. Witness statements from George McKenzie and Henry McCourt, forwarded in a letter from [William McNaught] to George Robertson, shipchandler, Commercial Road, London.

Additional Information: The prisoner was tried with James Nisbet, seaman. The prisoner was captain of The Margaret. The prisoner was from Port-Glasgow, Scotland.
