Description

Prisoner name: Charles Knight.

Prisoner age: 21 years.

Court and date of trial: Lancaster Quarter Sessions, Salford [Lancashire], December 1838.

Crime: Obtaining money by false pretences. £32 from Joseph Strickland of Salford, and defrauding his employer William Taylor, Manchester, prosecutor.

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.

Gaoler's report: 'Character good'.

Annotated (Outcome): 'Penitentiary and Answered 12 January 1839'.

Petitioner(s): The prisoner's parents John Knight and Ann Knight, his wife Grace Knight, and his brothers James Knight and Isaac Knight. Undersigned by ten supporters of the family, including Thomas Potter Mayor [of Manchester] and five Aldermen. Further underwritten with a character reference from the chaplain to the New Bailey Prison, Charles Bagshawe.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner was influenced by bad characters; the prisoner's family are distressed; this is the prisoner's first offence, he is contrite and pleaded guilty; the prosecutor had promised to recommend mercy, but did not do so through misunderstanding; the prisoner is young and has a wife and child; the Chairman of the Quarter Sessions is favourably disposed to the prisoner; the prisoner's behaviour has been exemplary whilst in gaol.
