Description

Prisoner name: William Hawkins and Joseph Tott.

Prisoner age: Hawkins, eight years and Tott, 16 years.

Court and date of trial: Hertford Quarter Sessions, January 1839.

Crime: Larceny.

Initial sentence: Three years imprisonment.

Annotated (Outcome): 'Recommendation of Chairman for Parkhurst'. 'Hawkins to Parkhurst 28 February 1839'. Joseph Tott 'Ordered to Penitentiary for 1 year and ½ 9 March 1839'.

Petitioner(s): Three petitions from Gascoyne [Lord Salisbury], Chairman of Hereford Quarter Sessions, one of which encloses petition from prisoner Joseph Tott with request for transportation.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Both prisoners were acting under the influence of their families; the prisoners have a chance to reform if sent to Parkhurst. Tott fears his health will suffer in prison.
