Description

Prisoner name: Charlotte Hanlon.

Prisoner age: 35 years.

Court and date of trial: Lancaster Quarter Sessions, December 1837.

Crime: Larceny. Stealing a candlestick at Oldham [Lancashire].

Initial sentence: 'Insane'.

Gaoler's report: 'Character bad - conduct irregular. Habits filthy'.

Annotated (Outcome): 'Warrants for removal to Lunatic Asylum for County of Lancaster, and Maintenance, 28 December 1838'. Died.

Papers: Order of Removal with covering letter from [H Dunstan], Assistant Governor, New Bailey Prison, Salford, Lancashire. Home Office note on death of the 'lunatic criminal'. Three letters from R Lomax, Chairman to the Visiting Justices, New Bailey, Salford. Copy testimonies from Sarah Hilton, Matron of New Bailey Prison; Charles Jukes, Assistant to the surgeon, House of Correction Salford; Henry Ollier, Surgeon New Bailey Prison; Mary Reade, nurse New Bailey Prison Hospital; James Booth, Turnkey in New Bailey Prison; Mary Scholfield; Edward Loftus. Letter from Leonard Willan, Clerk to the Visiting Justices of the Lunatic Asylum, County of Lancaster, enclosing copy of witness examinations of Richard Danson, Mary Lambert, [John Hills Probyn], Lawson Whalley and Emily Jane Brandon, taken at the enquiry into the prisoner's death.
