Description

Prisoner name: Henry Budge.

Prisoner age: 19 years.

Court and date of trial: Cornwall Lent Assizes, Launceston, March 1834.

Crime: Housebreaking. Stealing 'a bundle of worthless clothes or things of trifling value [and] a bottle of spirits'.

Initial sentence: Transportation for life.

Gaoler's report: 'Addicted to [drinking]'.

Annotated (Outcome): In New South Wales, nil, February 1838. 'It appears from the Report that the Convict is unworthy of any indulgence beyond the Ticket of Leave which he holds' March 1848.

Petitioner(s): The prisoner's mother Mary Budge of St Germans, Cornwall. [Tobias Furneaux], Committing Magistrate and clergyman of Devonport [Devon].

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner is young, of previous good character, and was lead astray by an older man; the prisoner is the only child of a widowed-mother; the sentence is severe.

Other papers: Letter from Downing Street forwarding copies of a despatch and enclosures from Sir Charles A Fitzroy, Governor of New South Wales. Letter from the Earl of St Germans forwarding [Furneaux'] petition.

Additional Information: The prisoner held a Ticket of Leave dated 20 February 1845 for the Windsor District, New South Wales. The prisoner was transported on the ship Hooghly 4 which arrived 18 November 1834.
