Description

Prisoner name: Elizabeth Parkins (or Elizabeth Parkin or Elizabeth Collins).

Prisoner age: 50 years.

Court and date of trial: Durham Summer Assize, July (or August) 1832.

Crime: Wounding with intent. Victim [Thomas Thew].

Initial sentence: Death commuted to transportation for life (or 14 years).

Gaoler's report: 'Character good'.

Annotated (Outcome): 'In Van Diemens Lane'. 'Free Pardon 18 June 1839'.

Petitioner(s): 17 inhabitants of Gateshead Fell, County Durham. The prisoner.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): An investigation after the trial showed the prisoner was not involved in the assault; prisoner behaved well throughout the time of her transportation.

Other papers: Document from P G [Emmett], Muster Master's Office, Hobart Town, Van Diemens Land. Letter from [James Stephen], Downing Street, forwarding a recommendation letter from Sir John Franklin, Lieutenant Governor of Van Diemens Land, a letter from William Hawkes and the prisoner's petition.

Additional Information: The prisoner was transported to Van Diemens Land on the William Bryan in October 1833. She married a constable, Collins, in Van Diemens Land.
