Description

Prisoner name: Henry May.

Prisoner age: 26 years.

Prisoner occupation: Boot-maker.

Court and date of trial: Central Criminal Court 3 January 1838.

Crime: Receiving stolen goods. Victims, Messrs Williams and Company, linen drapers.

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.

Gaoler's report: 'Character not known'. 'Conduct good on board Leviathan and York'.

Annotated (Outcome): 'Nil'.

Petitioner(s): Joseph May, prisoner's father with character references from four others. Mary May, prisoner's wife, and the prisoner's parents Joseph May and Helen May with character references from seven others. The prisoner's wife Mary May, undersigned by three others.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Prisoner was mislead by the co-defendant in to committing the crime and taking some blame; prisoner is the only child of aged parents and has dependent wife; prisoner is of good character; prisoner has behaved well on the convict hulk; prisoner has been offered employment on his release.

Other papers: Letter from William Roche MP forwarding one of the petitions and attesting to the good character of the supporters of the petition.

Additional Information: Prisoner held on Leviathan convict hulk. The co-defendant was called Fletcher.
