Description

Prisoner name: Elizabeth Hodges.

Prisoner age: 21 years.

Court and date of trial: Central Criminal Court, 29 January 1838.

Crime: Murder. Victim: female infant Sarah Hodges.

Initial sentence: Found not guilty on the grounds of temporary insanity.

Annotated (Outcome): 'To be kept in Bethlam Hospital till ascertained to be perfectly sane'. 'Warrant prepared for removal to Bethlam Hospital 10 February 1838'. 'Warrant of discharge and answered 15 February 1839.'

Petitioner(s): The prisoner and Richard John Hodge, her husband of 21 Ivy Lane, City of London. Richard John Hodges undersigned by 17 local people including [Thomas Killy], Alderman and a supporting letter attached from [W G Humphreys], 119 Newgate Street.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner was weak with a bad state of mental and physical health at the time of the crime, due to 'milk fever'; the prisoner has a husband and other child and is capable of tenderness.

Additional Information: The prisoner was removed to the Giltspur Street Compter after her trial, and then to Bethlem Hospital. The prisoner's husband was a butcher.
