Description

Prisoner name: James Carr.

Prisoner age: 28 years.

Prisoner occupation: Shoemaker.

Court and date of trial: Central Criminal Court, January 1838.

Crime: Larceny. Stealing £17 0s 0d. Victim, George Row, manufacturer, Northampton.

Initial sentence: Seven years transportation.

Gaoler's report: 'Character not known'. 'Conduct good on board Leviathan and StirlingCastle'.

Annotated (Outcome): 'Will not be sent abroad.'

Petitioner(s): The prisoner, undersigned by 168 people from Northampton. Ann Carr, the prisoner's widowed mother, undersigned by 53 supporters including the prosecutor and the Mayor of Northampton.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner is of previous good character and is repentant; the prisoner intended to make good the money before detection; the prisoner has respectable aged parents who are distressed and looking after the prisoner's child; the prisoner was unemployed at the time of his crime but has been offered employment if freed.
