Description

Prisoner name: Margaret Newman and Julia St Clair Newman.

Prisoner age: Margaret: 40 years. Julia: 19 years (or 26 years).

Court and date of trial: Old Bailey February 1837.

Crime: Larceny, two indictments (originally five indictments). Victims: Mrs Rawlinson, her sister and mother.

Initial sentence: [Both prisoners] 14 years transportation.

Gaoler's report: 'Characters not known'.

Annotated (Outcome): Ordered to Penitentiary on recommendation of Court. Julia St Clair Newman: 'Insane'; 'Ordered to Bethlem Hospital 26 December 1837'.

Petitioner(s): [George Ernst Birtins], Devon.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoners will be influenced by bad people if sent abroad.
